What To Wear
CLOTHING SHOULD NOT DISTRACT
This is Brad, don't be like Brad.
Remember, portraits are not about the clothing; they are about the people!
Logos, loud patterns, and overly casual clothing will divert attention from the people. Please spend some time reviewing and approving clothing options for the session to make sure clothing will not distract.
Men and boys will most likely need help in this area, but there is that rare male that needs no help at all. You will most likely know which category each male in your family falls.
COMPLEMENT, DON’T MATCH
Cute, but boiled peanuts?
The days of matching t-shirts are over; try to find colors that complement each other rather than match perfectly.
Options might be:
Soft cool colors like light blue, gray, and blush.
Warm tones, like brown, orange, and burgundy.
SOLIDS WITH SUBTLE PATTERNS
Solids are a natural choice and a great way to guarantee no mistakes when selecting clothing. But, if you want something with a bit more pop to it, look to enhance not distract.
Simple patterns and textures can go a long way in creating interest in the images. Remember, less is more.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS
Be careful that a beautiful image isn’t spoiled because someone wore their ripped jeans, metal head t-shirt, or insisted on cap with swear words on it.
Pay attention to things like socks, shoes, belts, and accessories. They can make all the difference in the world. Remember this is a special day!
STICK TO ONE OUTFIT
Don’t overcomplicate things unless these are high school senior images or an engagement session.
Changing clothing takes time away from the shoot and can often lead to grumpy kids and teens.
THINNING TIPS
If you want to look thinner in the images, remember that:
Dark clothing is much better at slimming you down than lighter tones.
Cover your skin. Long pants and sleeves are an easy way to look slimmer. Some women do not like their arms. If you fall into this category, wear long sleeves.
